More about subsidence

There are other causes of subsidence but fortunately these occur far less often and include:

Mining or solution cavities

Voids in the soils beneath the foundations caused by mining or natural wash out by groundwater may result in subsidence.

Landslip is the sudden movement of soil on a slope or occasionally the gradual creep of a slope over a period of time.

Landslips can be triggered by a number of events but the most common involve:

  • Retaining wall collapse
  • Coastal or river erosion
  • Heavy rainfall or flooding
